Mid-Century Modern Office Reveal: a stunning before and after transformation using the S.O.R.T. Method

When Nell, a busy mom, wife, grandmother, women’s pastor, speaker and writer needed a space to call her own she contacted me for assistance. Our goal: to turn what was once a bedroom, turned “catch-all” space into an inspiring mid-century modern office that fostered creativity.

BEFORE:

The Process

Nell and I began by simplifying the contents in the space. We removed all of the items from the space, sorted like items together and edited the piles. Items that did not belong in this room were placed elsewhere in the home or were donated or sold.

After completing the simplify process, I provided Nell with a detailed document outlining systems to put in place to organize her dream office. I also provided a mood board for inspiration along with a resource list. Nell approved and was hoping to get started on creating her dream office after returning from a trip to Mexico where she would be spending time volunteering in an orphanage.

The Plan for a Top Secret Transformation

Nell’s thoughtful husband took this small window of opportunity to contact me and see if we could pull of the ultimate surprise office reveal in one week! Always one to give to those in need near and far, he wanted Nell to be spoiled and honoured through this office transformation. I wholeheartedly agreed and we managed to complete a stunning mid-century modern office transformation within the week and with only a few hours to spare!

AFTER:

This small space (9.5 ft by 9.5 ft) was in need of a desk with a clear surface for writing with pen and paper or on the computer, a stylish office chair, storage for a large collection of books and a functional system for a fair amount of paperwork.

The end result: a welcoming, peaceful study to inspire Nell to write, read, reflect and study.

A hutch from IKEA serves as a place for books sorted by category, the printer, a plant and some sentimental items that were worthy of display.

I found this framed picture, which compliments the paint colours in the room perfectly, at Home Sense.

Unique items that Nell already owned were given a place to shine.

These cost effective labels were found at our local Dollar Store!

The office chair and writing desk from Structube take centre stage under the window. The gorgeous turkish rug from Home Sense grounds the space. A tall plant, brass floor lamp and curtain rod, simple white curtains, hanging file folder and a basket for trash complete this work space.

Open shelving allowed this small space to appear bigger. Favourite books are easily accessible and important paperwork is sorted, contained and labeled.

The Reveal

The look on Nell’s face when she saw the transformed space for the first time: PRICELESS!
